Choose Gloria Palace Amadores if you need a two-room Family Suite for up to six, want a splash park plus organised clubs, prefer a lively full-resort schedule, or would rather sit between Amadores and Puerto Rico than commit entirely to one beach. Its Premium Sea View rooms with private pools also give couples a privacy-led upgrade that Royal does not match in the same way.

The important exception for 2026: the official Thalasso Gloria - Amadores page currently says that the thalassotherapy centre is closed from 6 April to 30 November 2026. Travellers arriving before December should not choose Amadores on the assumption that its headline thalasso complex will be available. Royal's official spa page continues to advertise its included spa circuit daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Reconfirm both facilities directly before paying a non-refundable rate.

Location: Amadores beach convenience versus a two-resort position

The names make these hotels sound almost interchangeable. Their positions are not.

Gloria Palace Royal is on the hillside immediately above Playa de Amadores. The hotel describes itself as 200 metres from the beach. Amadores is purpose-built and relatively self-contained, with a seafront promenade and restaurants behind the sand. Gloria Palace Amadores occupies the cliff between Puerto Rico and Amadores. The hotel's facilities page lists a panoramic lift to the pedestrian seafront promenade, a public bus stop about 300 metres away, and distances of 500 metres to Playa de Amadores and 300 metres to Playa de Puerto Rico. This position creates more choice: walk one way for the calmer Amadores bay or the other toward Puerto Rico's marina, shopping and excursion departures.

The tradeoff is that the larger Amadores hotel feels less like a single-beach property. Internal lifts, the promenade elevator and the length of the complex matter more than a map pin suggests. Travellers with limited mobility should ask the hotel for the route from the allocated room to the restaurant, pool, promenade lift and taxi rank. A technically accessible room does not guarantee that every daily journey will be short.

It also advertises Tina's Club for ages four to twelve, a teenagers' club, children's pool, playground, daytime activities and a minidisco. Families whose children measure a holiday by pool time and organised entertainment will find more built-in value here.

Royal lists Tina's Club for ages four to twelve, daytime games, a minidisco, two freshwater children's pools and family access to the spa circuit at specific hours when accompanied by an adult. Its advantage is not a longer activity list. It is the easier combination of a good beach, a heated infinity pool and a smaller-feeling resort. That can be preferable with a baby, a child who dislikes busy activity programmes, or parents who expect to spend most days on Amadores beach.

The best room choice also changes by age. A toddler can share a room more easily than two teenagers. Older children often make a separate sleeping zone, a second bathroom and reliable Wi-Fi more valuable than a miniclub. Families of five or six should price Amadores' Family Suite against two Royal rooms only after checking whether Royal can guarantee the required proximity or connection.

Couples: Royal is the safer all-rounder, but Amadores has a private-pool ace

Royal is the stronger default for couples. Its current positioning is four-star superior; all listed categories are sea-view rooms or suites; spa circuit access is included; and Kaia, its public à-la-carte restaurant, adds a special-occasion option without leaving the hotel. The daily routine is naturally focused on Amadores bay rather than a large family-resort programme.

Amadores should not be dismissed as family-only. Its cliff position opens wide Atlantic views, and the adults-only Premium Sea View room with private pool can produce a more private stay than a standard room at Royal. It also makes sense for couples who want to walk between Amadores and Puerto Rico, book boat trips from Puerto Rico's harbour, or prefer a larger resort with more activity around it.

For a honeymoon or anniversary, compare specific room categories rather than hotel names. A private-pool room at Amadores may beat Royal's standard double; a sea-view suite at Royal may beat an ordinary double at Amadores. The correct calculation is the upgrade cost per night multiplied by the full stay, plus the value of spa access, meals and transport you will actually use.

Spa and thalassotherapy: the most important difference in 2026

These hotels use similar wellness language, but the products and access rules differ.

Royal's Wellness & Spa circuit is included for hotel guests. The official page describes a dynamic pool heated to 35°C, water jets, bubble hydromassage and microbubble beds, plus sauna, Turkish bath and showers. It currently opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Guests under 16 can enter only with an adult during the published child windows of 11:00-12:00 and 14:00-15:00. Treatments remain separate paid services.

Amadores has the much larger Thalasso Gloria complex, advertised at more than 1,800 square metres with seawater circuits and numerous treatment cabins. Standard hotel occupancy does not automatically mean unlimited thalasso access. The hotel lists a Double Thalasso room with access included, while its direct-booking benefits currently mention one “Get in Shape Pool” session for stays of at least four nights and a discount for further sessions.

However, the official thalasso page currently states that the centre is closed from 6 April to 30 November 2026. If your stay falls in that period, treat the facility as unavailable unless the hotel confirms a revised reopening in writing. If your trip is after that window, still verify reopening, access hours, age rules and exactly what your room or package includes. Never pay a thalasso-room premium based only on the category name.

Pools and winter stays

Both hotels are credible winter-sun choices, but “heated pool” needs context.

Royal advertises two adult pools, one a heated infinity pool, and two children's pools. Amadores advertises two heated freshwater pools, one with reduced-mobility access, plus a children's pool and splash park. The chain's FAQ says pools are heated during the winter months.

Water temperature, which pools are heated and whether a splash area is warmed can still vary. A heated adult pool does not mean every children's pool or water-play feature feels warm in January. Families booking primarily for swimming should ask which exact pools will be heated, the target temperature and whether maintenance is planned during their dates.

Wind matters too. South-west Gran Canaria is one of the island's established winter resort zones, but a breezy afternoon can make a shaded pool feel cooler than the forecast suggests. A sheltered balcony and a genuinely warmed pool can be more valuable than an extra square metre of room.

Half board or all-inclusive?

Both hotels support a resort-led stay, but the best board basis depends on how often you will leave the property.

Choose half board when the beach and local area are part of the holiday. The hotel chain currently advertises extension of all-inclusive service until 18:00 on departure day for qualifying direct bookings of at least four nights, although the room still has to be vacated at noon. That can be valuable with an evening flight, but verify that the benefit appears in your selected rate and confirmation.

Airport transfer, bus and car hire

Neither hotel requires a car for a pool-and-beach week. In fact, paying for seven days of rental parking can be wasteful if the car moves only twice.

Check the live timetable for the travel date and identify the correct stop for your hotel; Royal guests should not assume that the stop named after the Amadores hotel is theirs.

Rent a car when the itinerary genuinely includes the island's interior, north-west coast or several independent days out. A better compromise for many visitors is an airport transfer plus one or two local rental days. That avoids driving immediately after a flight and lets the rest of the holiday remain car-free. Excursions and days out from either hotel

For later trips, the comparison becomes closer: verify that the centre has reopened, compare the exact access included with your rate, and let the room category and daily holiday routine decide the winner.
